Did you know that inflammation is behind a wide range of chronic diseases and is responsible for more than half of the deaths worldwide? It is associated with heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver, or autoimmune or neurodegenerative diseases.
Inflammation is when our immune cells attack invading bacteria or viruses, eliminate the tissue destruction they cause, and start the repair process. Inflammation can cause redness, swelling, warmth, and pain outside the body.Â
An inflammatory process begins when chemical compounds are released from damaged tissue. In response, white blood cells produce substances that cause cells to divide and grow to rebuild tissue to help repair the injury.
Stress is one of the main factors that affects the inflammatory response that occurs in the body. Through different physiological and metabolic pathways, stress causes changes in the normal functioning of the different systems involved in the inflammatory process. Inflammation also comes from pathogens such as parasites, mold, viruses, bacteria, chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals.
The difference between acute and chronic inflammation is the intensity of the symptoms, the time it takes for them to appear, and the time it takes for the inflammation to heal.
In acute inflammation, the typical signs and symptoms of inflammation are present, such as heat, redness, swelling, and pain, which persist for a short period.Â
In chronic inflammation, the symptoms are not usually particular. They often do not manifest with the naked eye, such as muscle pain, sleep disorders, and persistent fatigue. Considered chronic when it lasts three months or more.
When chronic inflammation occurs, the body's inflammatory response accelerates aging and can eventually damage healthy cells, tissues, and organs, affecting multiple systems. The damage can ultimately cause chronic illnesses.
